I’m just back from a two-week unplugged trip to Greece. It was my first real break from work and LinkedIn in a while.
If you know me, you know I’m a total history nerd. Spending a couple of weeks walking through layers of the past was incredible. Between taking in the Acropolis (and an amazing dinner with a view of the Acropolis courtesy my wife), watching the sunsets at the Temple of Poseidon/Oia/Elafonisi beach and more, and exploring Crete to soak in Minoan culture from over four millennia ago, it was the ultimate reset. Add in the food and the long walks and it did wonders for clearing the head.
Of course, once a supply chain guy, always a supply chain guy. Even on vacation, you can’t help watching how things move. Traveling through Athens, Paros, Santorini, and Crete turned out to be a fascinating real-world lesson in how island ecosystems handle massive demand spikes.
A few things that stood out:
- Seasonal Workforce Flexibility: Watching how local communities scale up staffing for the summer rush, with people shifting into seasonal roles and balancing the intense tourism wave with the slower off-season.
- Agricultural Resilience: Seeing how agriculture adapts to brutal conditions like growing grapes in the punishing volcanic soil of Santorini to produce incredible wines.
- Island Logistics: The sheer coordination it takes to keep remote, high-demand tourist hubs supplied across narrow ferry windows and limited infrastructure.
It’s a good reminder that the best lessons in agility and resilience aren’t just found in textbooks or enterprise software. Sometimes they’re built right into the fabric of local communities that have been adapting to changing tides for thousands of years.
Here’s to returning with a clear head, fresh inspiration, and a renewed appreciation for how systems (both ancient and modern) actually endure.
What’s the best place your travels have taken you that completely shifted your perspective on how things work?
