Over the weekend, I heard a comment from a former India fast bowler stating that motivation is a very overrated word. And that temporary hype fades, whereas discipline is what sustains an athlete through fatigue and bad form. He emphasized that being consistent and showing up when tired is the real key to longevity in sports.

It made me immediately think about the world of Supply Chain and Transformations.

We love to talk about the exciting parts of a transformation including cutting-edge AI, the massive data overhauls, the inspiring kickoff meetings etc. which get everyone highly motivated.

But here is the reality: Supply Chain is not rocket science. It doesn’t require a daily dose of epiphany or a sudden burst of inspiration to work. It requires rigorous, relentless execution. It requires showing up and doing the fundamentals right, day in and day out.

Whenever I speak with clients about why a major transformation is stalling, the root cause is rarely a lack of technology or a lack of talent.

Instead, it’s that discipline and rigor are always the first casualties of a crisis.

  • When a deadline slips, teams abandon the new data governance processes.
  • When a code build is late, people revert to old, manual workarounds.
  • When the pressure mounts, the disciplined habits are traded for short-term firefighting.

True impact isn’t driven by the motivation you feel during the pilot phase. It’s driven by the discipline to stick to the process when things get messy.

If you want a transformation to succeed, stop waiting for the perfect conditions or the right vibe. Build the rigor into your daily operations so tightly that it becomes impossible to drop when the going gets tough.

Because in supply chain, consistency beats intensity every single time.
