Over the past few months, I have talked about transformations, supply chain resiliency, AI, and data. Today, I want to change it up and talk about another passion of mine: Cricket.

If you followed the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, you know India won and made history. They became the first host nation to win the tournament, the first to secure a record third title, and the first to win it back-to-back.

But as someone who builds and transforms global operations for a living, what fascinated me wasn’t just the silverware; it is how they did it.

After a rough elimination in 2022, India redefined their brand of cricket. With aggressive scoring, especially in 3 out of their last 4 games, they forced the opposition to chase a massive run rate from the start. To execute at that aggressive level and win consistently, they rewired the team starting with clarity of intent, meticulous planning, right skilling, empowering the players, and providing consistent & supportive leadership.

As I watched, I couldn’t help but see the direct parallels to Supply Chain Transformations. The playbook for dominating a World Cup is remarkably similar to the playbook for building an agile, future-ready supply chain.

To win in today’s volatile market, you need a similar approach:

Understand the End Goal First: Just like setting an aggressive target, you have to know what business outcome you are optimizing for before you touch the technology.

Know the Gaps: Assess your current capabilities (e.g., your data, legacy tech, and talent) against the current market conditions.

Prove the Approach: Don’t boil the ocean. Take small, calculated steps to prove the strategy works before scaling it.

Manage with Metrics: You can’t win if you aren’t watching the run rate! Use AI and real-time data to measure progress and adjust your strategy on the fly.

Consistent Leadership: Transformation is hard. Without psychological safety and clear, supportive messaging from leadership, the team will hesitate when it matters most.

Absent these fundamentals, whether it is on the pitch or in the board room, your transformation is likely going to fall short.
